- Agios Minas Church
The Church of Agios Minas is the main church of Salamina and a landmark right in the center of the city. Its foundation was laid in 1869, and it was officially opened in 1887. Built in the Greek-Byzantine style, the church features a cross-shaped dome design with elegant arches and a distinctive P-shaped vaulted nave. Inside, visitors are welcomed by impressive frescoes that cover the entire temple. These were painted between 1919 and 1925, mainly by the artist Dimitrios Sooutsos and his sons, with contributions from other well-known painters of the time. Among its treasures are two portable icons dedicated to St. Minas and Agios Mavros, created by Polychronis Lembesis, a celebrated Salaminian painter of the “Munich School.” The church also holds fine examples of marble art: the episcopal throne by the famous sculptor Ioannis Halepas (1892) and the pulpit by Nikolaos Spanos (1894), both from the island of Tinos. Today, the Church of Agios Minas is not only an active place of worship but also a cultural and artistic highlight of Salamina. Visitors can admire its unique mix of Byzantine tradition and Western artistic influence, making it one of the island’s most remarkable monuments.
